ARCS is an annual gathering rooted in the living practice of Contact Improvisation. We invite teachers as artists — researchers actively investigating movement, perception, and relationship. This is not just a festival. It is a field of inquiry. Over thirteen days, practitioners from across Montréal and beyond come together to deepen their practice, meet new collaborators, and encounter the edges of what CI can do.

ARCS est un rassemblement annuel ancré dans la pratique vivante du Contact Improvisation. Nous invitons les enseignant·e·s en tant qu'artistes — des chercheur·euse·s qui explorent activement le mouvement, la perception et la relation. Ce n'est pas seulement un festival. C'est un champ d'investigation. Shaking is ancient medicine for the spirit — and one of the most efficient and pleasurable ways of improving our overall health.

Practiced widely in Brazil, Africa, Japan and beyond, shaking is considered a sacred practice that regulates all of our "bodies" — physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual. It helps us ground, release, realign, energize, and return to full presence.

Every morning will have a different feel — the music, the rhythms, and the intentions will change. Some days will be softer, more spiritual, more meditative. Others more ecstatic and driving. But it will always be a shake practice. And it will always meet you where you are.

It's accessible to you because it's about your rhythm, your impulses, your intention.

Le shaking est une médecine ancienne pour l'esprit — et l'une des manières les plus efficaces et agréables d'améliorer notre santé globale.

Pratiqué largement au Brésil, en Afrique, au Japon et ailleurs, le shaking est considéré comme une pratique sacrée qui régule tous nos « corps » — physique, mental, émotionnel, énergétique et spirituel. Il nous aide à nous ancrer, à nous libérer, à nous réaligner, à nous énergiser et à retrouver une pleine présence.

BioBiographie

Mel Sirois is a Montréal-based somatic practitioner, facilitator, and movement artist devoted to truth, embodiment, and full self-expression. With a background in professional dance and theatre, her work lives at the intersection of movement, emotional depth, and energetic awareness.

Trained in Core Energetics, Movement Analysis, and Quantum Human Design, Mel guides experiences that bring people back into their bodies, their instincts, and their authentic beingness. Her facilitation blends somatic exploration, music, breath, and intuitive inquiry to support the release of old ways of being and the return to a more alive, connected self.

In 2017, she founded Inner Fire Mouvement — a space for self-expression, courage, and the joy of being fully alive through movement. Since then, she has guided hundreds of people through workshops, ceremonies, and ecstatic practices of shake, movement, and dance.

She is known for creating grounded and compassionate spaces where people can soften defenses, reconnect with their creative life force, and meet themselves with greater honesty.

We open the festival by coming home to the body. This workshop is an invitation to arrive — fully, curiously, and without rush. Drawing from Body-Mind Centering, Tuning Scores, Material for the Spine, and the Small Dance, we prepare the whole system for ten days of shared practice. We will explore somatic tools and developmental patterns that help us land in the present moment — releasing accumulated tension, reawakening peripheral perception, and finding the aliveness that makes Contact Improvisation possible. We play with spontaneity, release the need for anticipation, and invite the dynamic, unpredictable body to show up fully. This is also a toolkit you can return to throughout the festival. Use it to prepare for the day ahead, reset between classes, or restore at the end of a full day of dancing. We will build together a container of emotional, physical, and community safety — grounded in autonomy, transparency, and mutual care. A space where serious fun, rigorous training, and genuine play coexist. All bodies welcome. All levels. All abilities. Come ready to move, laugh, sweat, and reset.

BioBiographie
Valerie Sabbah is a Montreal-based choreographer, teacher, and somatic-movement therapist devoted to Contact-Improvisation as a rigorous, playful, and radically alive practice. She is a community leader in Montreal, where she has founded Moment Collectives, an eco-system that curates year-round CI programming, including weekly Material for the Spine study groups, Focus Jams, beginner and advanced classes, masterclasses, and durational intensives. Valerie curates the ARCS Contact-Improvisation Pre-Summer Festival in Montreal. Valerie also teaches internationally and has facilitated workshops and intensives across North American CI communities. Valerie studied extensively with Steve Paxton (Material for the Spine) and Lisa Nelson (Tuning Scores) through Figure Space, a long-term, research-based training rooted in rigor, curiosity, physics, play, and perceptual inquiry. Her practice is further informed by teachers such as KJ Holmes, Jen Polins, Kirstie Simson, as well as a background of over 20 years in classical ballet.

There is a difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is a passive verb, faced with a sonic interaction that imposes itself within the environment but to which we do not choose to offer attention. It is the result of the excitation of our auditory membranes by the surrounding air, whose message we can easily ignore. Listening, on the other hand, is an active process, using perception to decode sound and understand its path—where it comes from, what it is, and what its consequence is. Deep Listening Principle In this sense, within deep listening, no sound is passive. All sounds are co-written by the emitter and the receiver, regardless of their nature. Through deep listening emerges the idea of full sonic awareness and the power of imagination to perceive and feel as many sonic events as possible, their interrelations, and their nature—whether they arise from our inner voices, the sound of the wind, the ultrasound of electricity, the intentional sound of a musician, or the random creaking of a floor. The Experience An expanded and deepened listening practice that helps us explore the edges of our perception and expand our capacity for improvisation. This is the spirit of the research: • What is our capacity to enter into relationship? • To be influenced by a rhythm outside ourselves? • To tune into our own internal rhythm? • To share that rhythm, and then allow it to be surprised by the chaos of the unknown? • To embrace repetition and observe the influence of sonic inputs on our emotions? In the Echo-Location Jam the musician does not accompany the dance—the sound and the movement co-emerge. Listening becomes a shared field between bodies and sound.
Il y a une différence entre entendre et écouter. Entendre est un verbe passif, face à une interaction sonique qui s'impose dans l'environnement mais à laquelle nous ne choisissons pas d'offrir notre attention. Lalaina Ravelojaona (he/they) is a movement artist, guitarist, choir conductor, singer, percussionist and Franco-Malagasy beatmaker with extensive experience in music education, as well as numerous performances and musical projects developed in France and Canada. Their dance practice draws from Afro-descendant dances and Contact Improvisation.
Lalaina Ravelojaona (il/iel) est artiste du mouvement, guitariste, chef de chœur, chanteur, percussionniste et beatmaker franco-malgache, avec une longue expérience dans l'enseignement en musique ainsi que plusieurs performances et projets musicaux menés en France et au Canada. Many of us have a seasoned understanding of the duet—the weight, the listening, and the familiar rhythm of moving with another. In this workshop, we bring that experience into the complex, layered environment of the trio. We examine how to stay connected when the physical conversation expands to three bodies. How do you maintain a clear line of communication when you are the bridge between others? What happens when you receive information from multiple directions? My own curiosity right now is centered on the pelvis as a stabilizer and a director in these three-way exchanges. I want to research how we can use our center to handle the increased weight and complexity of trios. I'm also interested in jamming as a site for composition. We will look at the 3-2-3 flow as a way to enter and exit dances with intentionality. In this field of research, we will explore: • Expanded Attentiveness: Training your ability to track the whole dance, including the partners you aren't in physical contact with. • The Creative Pelvis: Enlivening the lower core to find a responsive center that balances stability and mobility. • Entry and Exit: Researching how to join or leave a dance in a way that feeds the momentum of the group. This is a collaborative inquiry, and I invite you to bring your own specific questions about trio dynamics. Because we will be working with complex weight-sharing and compositional choices, this workshop is designed for intermediate dancers who are comfortable with the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation.

This workshop focuses on the mechanics of trios through dynamic movement and shared weight. We will begin with solo tuning, progressing into complex weight-sharing and multi-body contact. You will engage in sustained physical contact, including being the "middle" person in a trio and exploring various ways to give and receive weight through the pelvis. The session involves verbal guidance, physical demonstrations, and collaborative improvisation. The sensory environment will shift between silence and music at a moderate volume. Lighting will be consistent. While the work is physically demanding and requires navigating the momentum of multiple partners, you are always encouraged to listen to your body's capacity. Avery Fitzgerald is an Associate Somatic Movement Professional. She draws from diverse movement traditions including Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Body-Mind Centering, Qi Gong, yoga, and social dance. A white settler from Treaty 6 Territory (Edmonton, Alberta) with roots in lək̓ʷəŋən land (Victoria, British Columbia), Avery is currently learning how to be a respectful guest in Tiohtià:ke. She is dedicated to creating inclusive, joyful spaces that support embodiment and collective growth through movement.

What Do We Mean by Chosen Mixity? This jam is . Contact improv is a dance form that involves physical proximity and a level of bodily intimacy which can make us feel vulnerable. With this chosen mixity, we aim to create a space where trans, non-binary, non-gender conforming people, and women are more likely to enjoy an increased sense of security while practicing contact improv. No experience required. No pressure to dance. Feel free to come to simply observe. Class – Contact Improvisation (18:30–~19:30) This contact-improvisation class, taught by Cachou & Caro, offers an exploration of the fundamental principles and practices of this discipline. We will learn to recognize the multidirectional choices the body has to move through space, activating and testing the ability to dare to create contact with other moving bodies, while maintaining body autonomy and self-agency in weight sharing. Jam – Chosen Mixity CI Jam (~19:30–21:00) Creation of a safer space within the Montreal contact improv community to allow queer people and women to connect through body and touch, reducing some of the fears and insecurities that can exist in regular jams. BioBiographie
We (Caro and Cachou) have been facilitating practical workshops on consent and the development of more conscious forms of intimacy since 2019. Our approach is somatic, feminist-Queer and trauma-sensitive. We have collaborated with various festivals and collectives that promote a positive vision of the relationship to the body and intimacy: Touch and Play, La Riposte Féministe, Le Corps a ses Raisons, Brûlances, the collectives NU.E.S and Post-Plottes. Through our practices, we explore the links between sensual, artistic and political emancipation. Hover in the tissues... release the neck and the body will follow. And float. This workshop explores ways to become lighter in our dance, by releasing the neck and head, spreading our weight out into the floor and into the space around us, harnessing horizontal momentum. Weightlessness is also co-generated. By freeing up your underdancer, we can generate new possibilities for fluidity and lightness in our dances. By sending the support of the floor up into your overdancer, they can effortlessly ride our waves. It would be helpful to have a foundation in the fundamental principles and practice of contact improvisation before jumping into this one. Dress in comfy layers to be still and dance in. There will be a bodywork aspect to this class. Knee pads aren't essential, but are recommended for this class — we have a couple you can borrow.

This workshop brings together the core practices of authentic movement and contact improvisation, weaving in the lens of Internal Family Systems and offerings from Expressive Arts Therapy.
This workshop brings together the core practices of authentic movement and contact improvisation, weaving in the lens of Internal Family Systems and offerings from Expressive Arts Therapy. We will begin with sensing ourselves, invoking that which observes in a space of curiosity and openness. In the presence of our internal open witness, we are joined by companions for the journey: one moving and one seated supportive witness. As we continue to observe the subtle movements of the body-mind held in a container of mindful attention, we grow our capacity to consciously enter the river of our experience together... relishing the rapids and the deeper pools of sensation, story, memory, metaphor, image, feeling, impulse and choice. From here we shift between different realms of somatic art-making, offering these parts of ourselves different ways to speak to us, perhaps through colour, words and sound. Bring your journal and a pen. Wear layers to adapt to periods of moving and stillness. All levels.

Tanya has been facilitating experiential experiments in creation, learning, and performance for over 25 years — finding delight in learning edges and generating full-body co-intelligence to create the dance we want as it emerges. She loves sharing both practical and magical pathways into contact improvisation, and weaves together a rich constellation of practices such as devised physical theatre, Playback Theatre, Theatre for Living, clown, ensemble movement improvisation, contemporary dance, authentic movement, Internal Family Systems, Expressive Arts Therapy, somatic studies in Dynamic & Structural Integration, Alexander Technique movement education, Collective Presencing, graphic facilitation, visual arts, and puppetry. She is co-founder of the Ontario Regional Contact Jam, Friends of the Floor Dance-Theatre, Fall On Your Feet Dance Lab, KW Contact Jam, and The Living Room Context. Currently studying Expressive Arts Therapy.

This workshop explores connection between partners through listening, conscious touch, and shared movement. We will begin by connecting to ourselves, to the floor, and to our environment, gradually moving toward connection with the dancing bodies around us. We will also explore efficient ways of moving on the floor and how to use it to maintain connection with our partners. A fluid and safe dance emerges from proximity with others. For this reason, taking the time to sense connections and daring to play with possibilities will be at the heart of this workshop's objectives.
Cet atelier de danse contact impro propose d'explorer la connexion entre partenaires à travers l'écoute, le toucher conscient et le mouvement partagé. Nous débuterons en nous connectant à nous-même, au sol et à notre environnement pour progressivement aller vers la connexion des corps dansant qui nous entourent. Une danse fluide et sécuritaire passe par la proximité à l'autre. C'est pourquoi prendre le temps de sentir les connexions et oser jouer avec les possibilités seront au cœur des objectifs de cet atelier.

Vincent-Nicolas Provencher holds two diplomas in contemporary dance performance. He also has training in traditional Québécois step dance (gigue) and theatrical performance. His specialty, however, remains partner work. Since 2013, he has performed for companies including Benjamin Hatcher, Marie Béland, Manon Oligny, Harold Rhéaume, SQX dance, Les Productions des pieds des mains, l'Opéra de Québec and Zeugma. Since 2012, he has been involved in Montréal's Contact Improvisation community. As a choreographer, his works blend CI, gigue and contemporary dance, including être(s) de glace (2020) and L&L – La grande valse (2024).

Sa spécialité reste néanmoins le travail de partenaire. In this workshop, you are invited to pay attention to the pathways that move from the center of the body outward, through the spine, the limbs, the skin, and into the floor. We will enter the practice through floorwork, rolling patterns, and spirals, attuning to the sensation first and form second. What does it feel like to extend fully through the limbs? How does your center organize and adapt to the sensation of extension and softening into the floor? What changes when you allow the floor to become a partner? My research draws from my experience in contemporary dance and various floorwork techniques. I am interested in how spiraling pathways and core–distal connectivity can create fluidity, clarity, and ease in movement. We will begin with solo explorations close to the ground, developing familiarity with gravity in the horizontal plane. Through rolling, reaching, and shifting points of contact, you will build strategies for traveling smoothly across and along the floor. From there, we will expand into duet work, applying these same principles to shared movement. We will explore under-dancer and over-dancer tactics, practicing ways of supporting, receiving, and moving through each other with responsiveness and precision.

In this workshop, we explore floorwork, spirals, and sharing movement through a rolling point of contact. Material is introduced in the form of explorations and prompts and then into more prescriptive tasks to prioritize felt experience and curiosity over specific shapes. You will work individually, in duets, and occasionally in small groups. Exercises include physical contact, weight-sharing, and moments of supporting and being supported by others. Instructions are given verbally and supported by demonstration. Music will not be used. Participants are encouraged to regulate their level of engagement at all times. Intensity: Dynamic / High Intensity. Knee pads suggested — participants should bring their own.

Andrea Muñiz is a committed practitioner and facilitator of contact improvisation, first introduced to the form at The Boston Conservatory through Olivier Besson. They value the practice for its attunement to agency and authenticity. Their research centers on athleticism and endurance, technique as a tool for efficiency and physical safety, and collective emergent composition. Andrea has shared their practice by teaching regularly at Contact Improv Boston, hosting labs and jams, and at the Ontario Regional Contact Jam in 2026. Their work has been presented at MELLE's WIP, Salem Arts Festival, and Big Bang 16. They will soon be presenting their newest work, Nude Character Shoe in Boston, San Diego, and Montréal. Andrea recently relocated to Montréal.

We arrive to every space with a history of law written in our bodies. We bring to our interactions and dances hidden ideas about right and wrong, polite and rude, permitted and not permitted. This is a physical, experiential exploration into how our unconscious or barely conscious rule sets limit or expand our movement potential. It's a way not to challenge laws as wrong in the name of some illusory idea of freedom. Rather, it's a way to more clearly see how we encode spaces and others with internalized rule sets.

We work on refining our performative gaze, both how we see ourselves and how we see each other, peering into the original theatrical scene: our performance in early infancy before our parents. This is not a therapeutic or psychoanalytic workshop. It's a playful look at our depths and origins with a view to expanding our range, both in terms of what and how we express and in terms of how deeply we are able to witness the performances of others on this our life stage.

Kristen Lewis teaches and practices dance as a tool, instrument, and road to liberation, self-knowledge, wisdom, and compassionate service. She has been creating work since 2002, and actively teaching since 2010 — in Victoria, on Salt Spring Island and, since 2023, in Ottawa. Her CI approach is influenced by her other disciplinary concerns: ballet, experimental theatre, American Performance Art Practice, and matrimonial law.

Lalaina Ravelojaona (he/they) is a movement artist, guitarist, choir conductor, singer, percussionist and Franco-Malagasy beatmaker with extensive experience in music education, as well as numerous performances and musical projects developed in France and Canada. Their dance practice draws from Afro-descendant dances and Contact Improvisation. Emanuel Guay (he/they) is a community worker and housing rights activist. He writes for the cultural journal Spirale, practices contact improvisation and is engaged in various mobilizations for a world free of borders and capitalism.
Lalaina Ravelojaona (il/iel) est artiste du mouvement, guitariste, chef de chœur, chanteur, percussionniste et beatmaker franco-malgache. Emanuel Guay (il/iel) est intervenant dans le milieu communautaire et militant pour le droit au logement. Il écrit pour la revue culturelle Spirale et pratique le contact improvisation.

There is a magical state in the practice of Contact Improvisation, where thinking melts into listening, decisions release into flow, and we find ourselves delighted by the unfolding dance. This class is an invitation into that state. We will begin with a generous warm-up: Mobilizing our joints, activating our muscle groups, tuning the instrument. From there, we will paint the space with our movement and expression, then open into playful connection with one another. We will explore foundational practices of Contact Improvisation: learning to release custodianship of our centre of gravity and trusting the fall. My research lives at the intersection of psychology, CI fundamentals, and the poetic expression of the unfolding dance. I am curious about the magic of how the dance can emerge when we aren't busy planning what to do next, and how a thoroughly warmed body and mind can change what becomes possible between us.

This class is an invitation to meet and enjoy the dance more deeply - to set down the worry of whether we are dancing well enough or making our partners happy, and to instead be moved by what is alive within us. We will move through a layered progression: a generous personal warm-up of body and mind, authentic movement, somatic work, and listening practices that gradually open into shared improvisation. My research is shaped by 13 years of fascination with Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Authentic Relating, somatic and psychological group work, and mindfulness. I am curious what becomes possible in the dance when we honour what is honestly here. Whatever is alive in you is welcome. Bring it.

Niku has been practicing Contact Improvisation for over 13 years, with roots in Contemporary Dance at the University of Calgary. His facilitation and practice live at the intersection of somatic listening, CI fundamentals, and the poetic expression of the unfolding dance. He loves creating warm, welcoming spaces where people come together to explore with intention and play, and is curious how the dance can emerge more from mutual listening and less from pre-planning. Professionally, he trains facilitators of various kinds to design and cultivate transformative spaces. He is currently based between Salt Spring and Vancouver Island.
Niku pratique le Contact Improvisation depuis plus de 13 ans. Sa facilitation et sa pratique vivent à l'intersection de l'écoute somatique, des fondamentaux du CI et de l'expression poétique de la danse. You arrive at this workshop with a body that has been through a landscape of weight, momentum, and constant sensory input. After days of flying, falling, and listening through your skin, your nervous system may be vibrating at a high frequency. In this three-hour immersion, you are invited to down-shift. How do you offer weight without effort? What happens to your partner's breath when you meet them with a touch that asks for nothing in return? You will work in a guided exchange, alternating between giving and receiving. Through the lenses of Osteopathy and traditional Thai Massage, you will learn to navigate the "upper and lower gates" — releasing the feet and hips that have carried you, and soothing the neck and shoulders that have supported the weight of others. The Journey: • The Architecture of Touch: Learning to use your Haramaki (center) and gravity to offer pressure without strain. • The Lower Gates: A guided sequence to release the legs, feet, and hips. • The Upper Gates: Focus on the spine, shoulders, and neck. • The Return: A period of silent co-regulation.

As a massage therapist with training in the Feldenkrais Method, The Axis Syllabus and Authentic Relating, Nico brings understanding of body mechanics and somatic awareness to his CI teaching. As a massage therapist with training in the Feldenkrais Method, The Axis Syllabus and Authentic Relating, Nico brings understanding of body mechanics and somatic awareness to his CI teaching. He is passionate about creating supportive spaces for playful exploration. Currently a Master's student in Somatic Education at UQAM.

We will bring the values of playfulness and curiosity to work on the mechanics of conscious duetting through rolling point of contact, sloughing, bridging, yielding, anchoring and pressure modulation in contact. We will dance in different duets to explore how letting go of tension and expectation can lead to flourishing creativity within each dance. Some things we will touch on: • Structural 3D awareness • Internal expansion and modulating tone as a tool for cultivating respect • Using leverage and counterbalance to support and be supported • Yielding into transitional moments • Lower body and upper body connection • Difference between reaching and leaning • Weight distribution across different body parts • How to be 10 percent freer while dancing (for newcomers to contact, all levels welcome)

In this workshop for intermediate/advanced practitioners, we will bring the value of agility and tactility to awaken our intuition. This practice invites us to lean into and remember to follow our biology as a space that expands our perceptual possibilities. We will work on physical partnering by using specific skills such as bridging, yielding, tone modulating, and weight-sharing to sharpen our awareness and dexterity. Some things we will touch on: • Spherical awareness and perceptual play • Tapping into the energetic circumference of our bones • Bridging our skeletons as a form of support and generosity • The role of the spine and spirals in contact • Modulating tone as a tool for cultivating respect • Seamless and graceful weight sharing • Finding flow in the mid-range • How to be 10 percent freer while dancing

BioBiographie
I am a dancer, choreographer, movement dramaturg and facilitator from Tehran and based in Coast Salish Territory (colonially known as Vancouver, Canada). I have been practicing dance and performance for the past 16 years and have been a company member and part of the EDAM Contact Improvisation ensemble since 2017 under the direction of Peter Bingham. In 2018, I was mentored by Raïna von Waldenburg on presence and embodiment. In 2023, I completed a mentorship project with Benoît Lachambre on deepening his performance and facilitation practice. I am the co-founder and co-artistic director of the dance-theatre-film company The Biting School.
Je suis danseur, chorégraphe, dramaturge du mouvement et facilitateur, originaire de Téhéran et basé sur le territoire Coast Salish (Vancouver, Canada). Je pratique la danse et la performance depuis 16 ans et je suis membre de l'ensemble de Contact Improvisation EDAM depuis 2017. Je suis co-fondateur et co-directeur artistique de The Biting School.

O.D.O.D. is an embodied exploration of patterns through movement and awareness. We will journey together through four interconnected phases — Observing / Dwelling / Owning / and Deconstructing — using them as gateways to deepen how we meet ourselves and others in dance. Rather than focusing on fixed techniques, this workshop invites a living inquiry into habits, choices, and relational dynamics as they emerge in real time. We will move through solo, duet, and group explorations. This space is designed for intermediate and advanced dancers, while remaining open and welcoming to curious beginners who feel called to explore.
O.D.O.D. est une exploration incarnée des schémas à travers le mouvement et la conscience. Nous voyagerons ensemble à travers quatre phases interconnectées — Observer / Habiter / Posséder / Déconstruire — en les utilisant comme portes d'entrée pour approfondir notre façon de nous rencontrer dans la danse. BioBiographie
Saule Ikigai is a body practitioner and Contact Improvisation teacher. Trained in a wide range of somatic techniques, therapeutic massage, yoga, qi-gong, tai-chi and social dances, she draws on these different approaches to enrich and deepen her CI teaching. The foundations of her approach rest on presence, curiosity and play.
Saule Ikigai est praticienne corporelle et enseignante de contact improvisation. Formée à un large éventail de techniques somatiques, elle s'appuie sur ces différentes approches pour enrichir et approfondir son enseignement du CI. How can we be light in all shapes and forms regardless of height and weight? Lifting and flying effortlessly; looking for sustainability within the practice. How can we fall into flying, fly onto carrying? Spiraling like wind and water, connecting to the ground over and over again. When alignment replaces effort; how centrifugal force can carry us, how gravity can be trusted? This is an exploration of clarity: allowing weight-sharing to evolve into lifts — rather than making them happen. Neta Peleg Ginzburg is a multidisciplinary artist and creator of dance-literature performances, from Jerusalem. She approaches the moving body as a way to heal, expand and explore wider concepts and states of being, and the stage as a space to share feelings, ideas and discoveries — and to keep the research going. In other roles: she teaches Contact Improvisation and Somatic movement based on anatomy around the world, practices and shares the ancient skills of hunter gatherers in nature, engages in poetry and philosophy, accompanies others with Focusing, is a percussionist, and a feminist peace activist. Loves it when all passions merge into a larger creation.

Elle aborde le corps en mouvement comme un moyen de guérir, d'élargir et d'explorer des concepts et des états d'être plus vastes, et la scène comme un espace pour partager des émotions, des idées et des découvertes — et pour continuer la recherche. Elle enseigne le Contact Improvisation et le mouvement somatique basé sur l'anatomie à travers le monde, partage les savoirs ancestraux des chasseurs-cueilleurs en nature, s'engage en poésie et philosophie, accompagne d'autres avec le Focusing, est percussionniste et militante féministe pour la paix. Elle aime quand toutes ses passions fusionnent en une création plus grande.

Dena Davida (b.1949) was raised in the United States by a family of artists of Jewish and Eastern European heritage. Active in the dance milieu for 55 years, she is a researcher, community and university teacher, choreographer and dancer, writer and editor. As a new immigrant to Canada in 1977, she introduced the first Contact classes to Montréal, organized a work group, co-founded the Catpoto women's improvisation collective who presented in their studio many CI dancers on tour including Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson and Nancy Stark Smith. She earned her B.A. in Theater and Dance at the University of California at Irvine (1970), her M.A. at Wesleyan University in Dance Studies (1995), completed her doctorate in the Programme d'études at UQÀM et pratiques des arts at the University of Québec (2006). During 25 years she taught Contact Improvisation, dance composition and theory in the UQÀM Dance Department. She co-founded and curated Québec's first dance presenting space Tangente in 1980, as well as the Festival international de la nouvelle danse in 1985. Her essays on dance and culture have been published in various magazines, journals and anthologies, her most recent essay appearing in Resistance and Support: Contact Improvisation @ 50. After taking leave of Tangente and UQÀM, in 2022 she co-founded and is now managing editor of TURBA: The Journal for Global Practices in Live Arts Curation.

Active dans le milieu de la danse contemporaine depuis 55 années, elle est chercheuse, enseignante en milieu communautaire et universitaire, chorégraphe et interprète, écrivaine et éditrice. Nouvelle immigrante au Canada en 1977, elle introduit les premiers cours de Contact Improvisation à Montréal et, par la suite, co-fonde un groupe de travail et des jams, co-fonde la collectif improvisatrice féminine Catpoto ce qui diffuse des présentations dans leur studio plusieurs artistes en CI en tournée, y inclus Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson et Nancy Stark Smith. Elle obtienne un baccalauréat en théâtre et danse à l'Université de Californie à Irvine (1970), une maîtrise en Études de la danse à l'Université Wesleyan (1995) et son doctorat au Programme d'études de l'Université du Québec à Montréal et pratiques des arts à l'Université du Québec (2006). Pendant 25 ans, elle enseigne l'improvisation, la composition et la théorie de la danse au Département de danse de l'UQAM. Volunteers will have access to classes and jams in exchange for their hours of involvement. The number of classes and jams accessible will be proportional to the hours of responsibility taken on.
